Year 1 has 3 classes PandasLeopards and Tigers.

Year 1 is the part of Key Stage 1, led by Mrs Zastron (Phase Leader), and builds on the strong starting points of our Foundation Stage. Children in year 1 learn through more structured lessons however they also have opportunities to develop skills and knowledge further through the continuous provision. There are many opportunities for practical learning during the day linked with non-core subjects delivered through exciting projects. This stage consists of three core subjects mathematics, English and science and the foundation subjects of geography, history, design technology, art, music, computing religious education and physical education. Phonics/reading and handwriting are part of daily life here at Heronshaw school too.

Children in Key Stage 1 are taught non-core subjects with a focus on clear progression of knowledge and skills. Each subject areas aims to build on previously taught subject content with a focus on deepening vocabulary. During these years of school life, children are encouraged to learn both practically and academically and all work is monitored to ensure that students are making the desired progress. We encourage children to take pride in their achievements and adopt an independent and self-reliant approach to school and particular attention is given to the social and emotional development of all children.

In Year 1 all children are assessed formally in the summer term when they do their Phonics Screening check. This is statutory test. During the spring term there will be a parent information meeting to discuss how the children prepare for this test and how we support children.

Overviews of learning

Each half term we will publish additional information about the skills and learning that will be covered in key areas of the curriculum. Please refer to the overviews when focusing on how to support your child at home. Your child's class teacher will be able to talk through any queries that you may have.

Equality in Teaching and learning

We provide all our pupils with the opportunity to succeed and to reach the highest level of personal achievement. We do this by:

  • Ensuring equality of access for all pupils and preparing them for life in a diverse society
  • Using materials that reflect the diversity of the school, population and local community without stereotyping
  • Promoting attitudes and values that challenge any discriminatory behaviour or prejudice
  • Providing opportunities for pupils to appreciate their own culture and celebrate the diversity of other cultures
  • Seeking to involve all parents in supporting their child’s education
  • Utilising teaching approaches appropriate for the whole school population which are inclusive and reflective of our pupils.
