Music at Heronshaw School

Music is the rhythm and harmony of Heronshaw School.

Our core music curriculum is provided at Heronshaw by Junior Jam, who bring with them expert musicians delivering weekly lessons to year 1 and 2. Inspiring our musicians with an interactive music curriculum, children are exposed to a range of musical genres and have the opportunity to enhance their practice by playing a variety of different instruments. This term our musicians are studying African drumming and are buzzing with excitement for the Djembe drums they have been playing in class.

Alongside our core curriculum we also run extracurricular music provision during school time for our budding musicians; offering many opportunities for all of our children to express themselves through many mediums.

From singing club with Mrs Calder, weekly private acoustic guitar lessons with Mr Finch (Strum-into-Music), and our newly formed Rocksteady bands with Ryan (Rocksteady band leader); music has found its way to the heart of Heronshaw School.

Rocksteady is in its second week at Heronshaw. Bands have been formed made up of guitarists, keyboard players, drummers and vocalists. Each week the musicians come together to learn a new music skill as they work collaboratively to play a section of a well-known track each week. Here we see some children learning the main chorus for Shotgun by George Ezra and We Will Rock You by Queen. As the bands progress they will enhance their music practice further and develop their knowledge and skill of their chosen instrument.

Mr Finch from Strum-into-Music has been at Heronshaw for the autumn term and is already having a fantastic impact on our children as they hone their skills on acoustic guitars. Children are enjoying learning Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple.

Singing club has started this half term where our singers are forming a choir to lead our Christmas singing performance at the church. As well as this Mrs Calder will be venturing out into the local community to share the love and joy of singing with residents of Jupiter House, Walnut Tree.

You will see around the school that all of our children who take part in one of the above extracurricular activities wear a special gold treble clef badge, demonstrating the presence of musical talent we have here at Heronshaw School.

If your child is interested in taking part in one of our musical enrichment opportunities, please get in touch with Mrs Calder (our Music and English lead) who can sign you up or point you in the right direction!
