Playground Offer
At Heronshaw, playtimes are an important part of the school day and provide opportunities for children to be active, creative, social and independent. Our playground is designed to support children's physical development, imagination and wellbeing, while encouraging positive friendships, cooperation and teamwork.
Children have access to a range of exciting outdoor facilities, including:
- A large climbing frame
- A trim trail to develop balance, coordination and confidence
- A sports pitch for team games and physical activities
- Role-play houses that inspire imaginative play and storytelling
- A mud kitchen for creative, exploratory and sensory play
To keep playtimes engaging and inclusive, we offer a daily rotation of activities and equipment. These may include:
- Skipping
- Football
- Basketball
- Balance games
- Ball skills activities
- Team games and challenges
Our trained Play Leaders play an important role in our playground community. Selected from Year 1 and Year 2 classes through a democratic process, children are invited to put themselves forward for the role and successful Play Leaders are rotated each half term. They help to organise activities, teach games, encourage fair play and support other children to join in confidently. Through this role, children develop leadership skills, responsibility and confidence while acting as positive role models for their peers.
Our Play Leaders promote our Herons' Values by encouraging kindness, teamwork, respect and inclusion. They support younger children in learning new games and activities, helping everyone to feel welcome and involved. By providing opportunities for children to lead, collaborate and support one another, we help them develop into responsible citizens who contribute positively to our school community.
We believe that high-quality play experiences are an essential part of childhood. Through active play, exploration and social interaction, children develop the physical, emotional and social skills that help them to thrive both in and beyond the classroom.
