Autumn 2020 Update from the Head of School
The coronavirus pandemic has had a profound impact on the lives and education of all children. At Heronshaw School we are committed to supporting all children to achieve their best throughout these uncertain times.
Being in school is key to this success. Being on time is vitally important too. During the pandemic we will continue to expect daily attendance from all children who are well enough to be in school.
There may be occasions when a bubble closure or period of self-isolation cannot be avoided and alternative arrangements for learning will be put into place. We do ask that children are not kept off for minor colds or other non-Covid-related reasons.
Attendance will be followed up in accordance with our Attendance Policy.
Children are expected to be in school every day. At Heronshaw we work hard to ensure this is the case for all children. As we are sure you are aware that children who come to school regularly make far better progress. Anyone who does not come to school for whatever reason, should call in to the office on a daily basis, it can then be decided if the reason is an authorised absence, for example sickness or unauthorised. If any child is absent without a phone call you will receive a call within an hour of school starting. If we are unable to contact you we will work down the list of contacts, followed by a home visit if necessary. These absences are at risk of being unauthorised and formally recorded.
Attendance will be monitored termly. If your child’s attendance drops below 96% you will receive a letter encouraging you to work with the school to improve it. If an improvement is not being made and it drops further you will be invited in for the attendance panel with the head teacher and a governor.
We also celebrate children’s attendance. The class with the best attendance is recognised weekly in assembly, certificates are given out termly for children whose attendance is 96% and above and special recognition is given to children who achieve 100% for the whole academic year.
We hope to work closely with you, in order to ensure your child makes the best progress and takes full advantage of the opportunities offered to them.
